Scholarship Details
The AI4D Africa Scholarship Program is funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). This initiative supports the training of PhD students and Early Career Academics (ECA) in AI and ML, focusing on addressing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through responsible AI solutions.
Program Goals:
- Train skilled professionals in AI and ML across Francophone, Anglophone, and Lusophone sub-Saharan Africa.
- Foster fair distribution of beneficiaries across regions.
- Promote responsible AI practices.
Scholarship Categories
Category 1: Registered PhD Students
This category is open to candidates already registered in a PhD program related to AI (e.g., machine learning, natural language processing, intelligent robotics). Scholarships are awarded for a duration of two years.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Enrolled in a PhD program in AI or related fields.
- Completed coursework and research proposal.
- Letter of support from supervisor and a copy of PhD admission letter.
- Strong academic credentials and commitment to an academic career.
- Fluency in French or Portuguese.
- Nationals or permanent residents of a sub-Saharan African country.
Funding Details:
- Tuition fees (2 years): $4,000
- Research activities: $24,000
Category 2: Early Career Academics (ECA)
This category supports Early Career Academics who can supervise PhD and MSc students in AI and ML. Funding is provided for two years.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Hold a PhD in AI or ML obtained within the last 3-5 years.
- Strong academic credentials and commitment to an academic career.
- Nationals or permanent residents of a sub-Saharan African country.
Funding Details:
- Research costs: $25,000
- Research infrastructure: $10,000
- Travel costs: $2,500
- Tuition fees for MSc students: $4,000
